The Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream moisturizer was a product I recently used up after using it for months. Sharing my review and if its nourishing formula worked on my dry and dehydrated skin.

If you’re not familiar with Drunk Elephant, it’s one of the most popular skincare brands at Sephora. They are a clean brand, using the highest quality ingredients.
They avoid the “Suspicious 6” which are essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical screens, fragrance/dyes, and SLS. They are very popular for a reason, with high ratings and reviews on many of their products.
This moisturizer is a mixture of 6 nourishing African oils, whipped together, to give it a lighter texture. It’s supposed to really lock in all the moisture and hydration in the skin, and is formulated for anyone dealing with dry and/or dehydrated skin. Although it is a thicker formula, it’s not supposed to feel heavy on the skin.
On Sephora, the Drunk Elephant Lala Retro moisturizer has been rated over 1K times, with an average review of 4.2 stars.
Ingredient highlights (from Sephora):
- Blend of Six African Oils: Delivers intense hydration while brightening and rejuvenating skin.
- Plantain Extract: Aids in restoring moisture while brightening.
- Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer: Has a smaller molecular weight than hyaluronic acid and is able to deeply penetrate skin, delivering excellent hydration and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Fermentoil Green Tea Seed: Rich in antioxidants to provide moisturizing and nourishing benefits.

I used this the Drunk Elephant Lala Retro moisturizer as my night cream, and Protini during the daytime since it was much lighter. I did like using Lala, but I didn’t love it.
It hydrated my skin, but I felt like it was a bit too heavy for me. When I woke up in the morning I felt like some of the product was still sitting on top of my skin, and hadn’t fully sunk in all the way.
Although I do want a very hydrating night cream, I want to wake up with my skin feeling nourished and hydrated, soaking up all the product. I don’t want leftovers remaining on my skin feeling greasy and heavy.
It seems that my skin responds best to gel formulas for moisturizers. This took me a while to figure out because I assumed thicker formulas would work well for my dehydrated and dry skin. But thicker formulas seem to typically leave residue behind and not absorb all the way, which I don’t like.
I used the Drunk Elephant Lala Retro during during the winter when my skin is at its driest, so I thought it would have soaked it all up, but that wasn’t the case for me.

I will say though that this moisturizer did not break me out at all. I have acne prone skin, and was a little worried about using this moisturizer since it is so thick, but I had no problems with breakouts. Even though the product was left sitting on top of my skin, it did not clog my pores or cause any acne.
It’s very soothing and calming, which I liked. It absolutely did increase hydration in my skin, I just really didn’t like the feeling of leftover product in the morning. Also, I have sensitive skin, and there was no irritation whatsoever while using this.
As with Protini, I really liked the pump and packaging of the Lala Retro. The way it dispenses product, the moisturizer isn’t ever exposed to air, and you don’t have to dip your fingers into the product every time you use it. Much more hygienic and helps the product last longer. The packaging uses an air pump, so you use every last drop!

If you do want to try the Drunk Elephant Lala Retro moisturizer, I’d recommend it only as a night cream. It seemed much to heavy for use in the day time, unless your skin absorbs it much quicker than mine.
I think if you have oily skin, you won’t love this moisturizer. If you have dry skin, it is worth a try to see if it works for your skin. Especially if your skin reacts well to thicker, nourishing formulas, and is able to absorb them.
If you want to test this moisturizer out, ask Sephora to try a sample, or perhaps purchase one of the Drunk Elephant littles kits. It was very nourishing and soothing, but it just ended up leaving too much product sitting on top for me.
I really did enjoy the Drunk Elephant Protini moisturizer, and shared all about my thoughts and a full review on that post. If you want to check it out on Sephora, click here.
