I have been wanting to write up my Tarte Shape Tape Concealer review since I first tried this product. If you’ve heard of it, then you’ve heard of the hype that surrounds it. It’s the reason I purchased it in the first place. But I’m going to breaking down all my thoughts on if this concealer truly does live up to all of the rave reviews.
In case you don’t know about all the hype I’m referring to, I’ll quickly break it down. Tarte released this concealer as a Ulta exclusive product a few years ago. Some big name beauty influencers tried it, and they ALL simultaneously fell in love with it. Customers did the exact same.
Tarte figured out some straight up magic with this formula, and a holy grail product was born. It quickly became the only concealer you’d see in any beauty influencers makeup routine.
The overall Tarte Shape Tape Concealer review I kept hearing was that it was full coverage, non-drying, non-creasing, and long lasting, aka the perfect concealer. I had to try it for myself and see if it was as good as SO many people were saying it was.
First of all, the shade range is pretty good. They’ve added shades throughout the years, and currently have 30 shades in total. I know inclusivity in shade ranges is a big issue in the beauty industry, and it appears that there is good variety with this concealer.
It has a large doe foot applicator, making it very easy to apply to bigger areas, and smaller ones as well using the tip.
My first impression of the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer was that I really did not like the smell. It has a very heavy floral scent, that immediately gave me a bit of a headache. Luckily the scent goes away really quickly, but I wonder why it’s in there at all? Seems like an odd scent to add in, especially such a strong one.
I’ve used this concealer for probably over a year now, I’ve even repurchased it, so I definitely have had time to fully form my opinion.
Okay, yes it absolutely is a very full coverage concealer. If you’re looking to cover dark circles, blemishes, discoloration, or whatever else, this concealer will definitely do the trick. It’s a really great product to cover dark circles especially. I have really dark purple under my eyes and it nearly 100% conceals it.
It is long lasting as well, I rarely needed to re-apply. It lasted much longer under my eyes than on my blemishes I cover, but I think that’s more because I touch my face way too much, and the constant touching rubbed some of it off. I never need to touch up under my eyes.
In terms of not being drying or not creasing – that’s not the experience I had. On blemishes, it wasn’t too drying, or at least that wasn’t too much of an issue.
But under my eyes, it definitely was drying and creased with or without setting powder. Including being layered over very hydrating undereye cream, like the Farmacy Dew It All, and sometimes even marula oil.
I have dry skin to begin with, so it’s a struggle for me to find a concealer that doesn’t look too dry under my eyes. It’s not the worst creasing in the world, but it’s definitely there.
Not the creaseless non-drying magic I had heard about! But I think I may be in the minority with that experience with my desert like dry skin.
Because of how good the coverage is, especially on my breakouts, I still use it. But, I’m on the lookout for one that isn’t so drying and doesn’t crease on me.
I recently have been using the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer, which I do like. I like it under my eyes, but it doesn’t cover my spots as well as the Shape Tape.
One thing that really annoys me about this concealer is that when I go to screw the cap back on, product will squeeze out. If I don’t regularly wipe it off, I am always dealing with concealer all over my hands and makeup bag. It’s a mess, and wasting product.
I polled my audience over at Ivy Rose Knows, and seemed like around half dealt with the same issue. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal but in using this concealer I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten it all over the place!
So, my Tarte Shape Tape Concealer review is that it’s pretty good, but not great. I personally think it only *kinda* lives up to the hype. It’s got great coverage, and so far is my go-to for covering up breakouts. But, I will be searching for one that isn’t so drying on my skin.
I think if you have normal – oily skin you will really like this concealer. If you have very dry skin like myself, it may crease underneath your eyes, or look dry when you apply it. You may need to play around with what product you layer underneath that could add some hydration.
If long lasting, great coverage is what you’re searching for, this is definitely a great concealer to try! Just be mindful that it can crease when your skin is too dry.
