I am always looking for products that will help my very parched skin, especially in the winter, so when I saw the Ren Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm, I knew I had to try it. I deal with dry skin all year round, but when winter comes around I need a product that is going to really sink in and help with long lasting moisture. I get it the worst overnight, so I was hopeful for this product.

From the 209 reviews, its average rating is a 4.4/5 stars. A common theme amongst these reviews is how this is the dream product for anyone dealing with very dry skin. I was SOLD.
From Sephora, the Ren Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm is “A nighttime rescue balm that uses enzymatically activated oils to feed and moisturize the skin, strengthen the skins barrier, and relieve irritation.”
Ingredient Highlights (from Sephora):
- Lipids of Activated Oils from Olive, Almond, Borage, and Linseed: Easily absorbed into the skin.
- Jojoba, Sun Flower Oil Complex, and Beta-Glucan: Support skin’s natural lipid balance to strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and alleviates signs of irritation from dryness.
The Ren Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm is a thick almost jelly like balm that is intended to both hydrate your skin as well as calm it. It comes in a smaller package, around 1 oz, than your average moisturizer or night cream, because of how concentrated the product is.
Because the consistency is so thick, it took me a night or two to get the hang of just how much I needed to cover my entire face. You really do not need very much at all, a little goes a long way. Although it’s a smaller amount, I feel this will last me as much as a nighttime moisturizer would or longer because you need to use such little product. At least I have found that to be the case.
If you are looking to try this product, I would suggest using less than you’re expecting too and going back to add more if you realize that wasn’t enough. This way you can avoid applying too much and wasting it!
After the first night I knew this was easily a new favorite product for my dry skin. Even if I used a bit too much!

To apply, you scoop a little bit from the jar, and rub between your palms to warm up and spread out. This step is crucial and I would not recommending applying straight from the jar to your skin. I’ve found that warming it up in your palms really helps with application and allows it to spread more easily.
Because it is so thick, it can be a little tricky to spread out, so rubbing it between your palms definitely helps with that.
After you’ve warmed it in your palms a bit, apply! I typically start applying where I am most dry, and then spread elsewhere. I feel like there is a little bit of a learning curve with the application process and getting it to spread and apply properly all over.
Another way I’ve been using this product, and plan to as the warmer months roll around, is as a spot treatment. In spring and summer, although my skin is still dry, it’s not quite as bad at the winter time. I don’t expect I’ll use this as a regular nighttime moisturizer, but rather on the areas that I need a bit of extra moisture.
Around my nose and eyebrows will sometimes get a bit flakey, so I will add some there on top of whatever moisturizer I’m using. Any spot that needs some hydration I will use the Ren Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm to treat.
When I use it as a spot treatment, I still will not apply straight from the jar to my skin. I’ll take a little amount on my finger tip and rub it between my finger tips to warm up a bit. I just find doing this helps with application no matter as a spot treatment or when applying to my entire face.
When I am the MOST dry, I will layer this with another moisturizer as well. Typically this one, as it’s another long time favorite I use year round to help with my dry skin.

I never use this product during the day time, only at night. In my experience, it really needs the time to properly sink in and do it’s thing. During the day it would be too thick of a product for me. Although I saw some reviews stating they mixed in a teeny bit with their moisturizer during the day time and it worked well! I’ve yet to try that.
In terms of how thick it is and breakouts, I haven’t noticed any additional breaking out when I’ve used this product.
That being said, if you have oily skin I don’t see this being a go-to product for you unless you are experiencing dryness.
If you have dry to very dry and sensitive skin, I highly suspect you will love this product as much as I do! Highly recommend!
