I recently picked up the Ilia Limitless Lash mascara during the spring Sephora sale, and after trying it out for a few weeks I’m sharing my review!
Ilia is makeup brand with a focus on clean and natural ingredients and avoiding harsh chemicals and toxins. They focus on ingredients that are good for your skin, and bring out your natural beauty.
Also, they have sustainable packaging wherever possible, and used recycled materials in many of their product’s packaging.
The Ilia Mascara uses a plastic wand that is dual-sided so you can really lift and separate your lashes, and coat each lash evenly without any clumping or smudging.
You’re supposed to use the side with the shorter bristles at the base of your lashes to initially coat them and lift them up. Then, use the other side of the want to add length and volume. Use just 1-2 coats for a more natural look, or add more coats to make your lashes look more voluminous and dramatic.
I have found that I prefer to do the opposite. I use the longer bristles to initially apply, coat, and lift my lashes. Then as I build it up on my lashes, I switch to the shorter bristles to add definition, and brush out any clumps.
The formula uses beeswax, carnauba wax, keratin and shea butter to condition and fortify your lashes without weighing them down. It’s supposed to be a buildable formula, while also being very lightweight, and flake-free.
It comes in both a full size and travel size, which I always prefer in a mascara. I typically like to use the travel size, especially when I have a few different mascaras on rotation. This way, it doesn’t dry out before I can use it all up, and it’s super easy to throw in my bag to have with me, or for travel.
I’ve been using the Ilia mascara a little while now, and so far I’m really impressed. I love finding products that work really well from clean brands, because when I can make the switch to cleaner brands and products, I prefer to.
It’s really easy to apply, even with the two sides of the wand. It makes it really easy to get every angle of your lashes. I personally prefer this type of want versus the brush kind, so I found it really easy to work with and use.
The shorter bristle side makes it really easy to coat your bottom lashes as well. It’s definitely a buildable formula, and doesn’t get clumpy as long as you’re building up the formula while it’s still wet, and combing through your lashes. I don’t notice any flaking on me, but I tend to not get that issue with mascaras very often.
Something that’s important to me in a mascara is how easy it is to remove. I used to have a non-cruelty free mascara that I really liked, but it was SO difficult to remove I ended up not using it anymore because it wasn’t worth the effort. It wasn’t even a waterproof formula!
This was very easy to remove using a cleansing balm, and remove entirely. No waking up the next day realizing there was still mascara all over my lashes. Just clean lashes! It also was easy to remove with a cleanser as well.
I really was surprised by how much I liked the Ilia mascara. I’m so picky when it comes to mascaras, and I haven’t used many by natural brands, so I wasn’t really sure if it would work for me. I really liked how it looked natural, while still giving me some volume and length.
It was super easy to use, and remove. It lasted all day without and smudging or flaking. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about this mascara! I highly recommend you trying out the Ilia mascara for yourself!
Like I said, it comes in the travel size if you don’t want to commit to the full size. Or, you’re like me and prefer to use travel sized mascaras. I absolutely will be repurchasing the Ilia mascara when I run out of this one!
